Emeralds are softer than diamonds, rubies and sapphires and thus require more careful handling and care. When needed, they should be gently cleaned in warm soapy water using a soft brush or cloth and air dried. Most emeralds contain microscopic surface-reaching inclusions, or fissures, which are commonly filled with oil. Thus, they are sensitive to chemicals and pressure so should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner or a strong solution such as those with ammonia or alcohol as you might with diamonds or other hard stones. They are best stored in a soft pouch and will give years of pleasure when treated with care.

Occasionally gently wipe your pearls with a soft, damp cloth and store them separately to prevent scratching from harder gemstones or metals. If worn frequently, pearl strands may stretch over time and need to be restrung, ideally with individual knots between each pearl, an easy and inexpensive process well worth doing to avoid unexpected breakage or loss.
