Emeralds are softer than diamonds, rubies and sapphires and thus require more careful handling and care. When needed, they should be gently cleaned in warm soapy water using a soft brush or cloth and air dried. Most emeralds contain microscopic surface-reaching inclusions, or fissures, which are commonly filled with oil. Thus, they are sensitive to chemicals and pressure so should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner or a strong solution such as those with ammonia or alcohol as you might with diamonds or other hard stones.
